Behind the Scenes Cooking at KFC

While in Kentucky visiting KFC’s mothership I was given the chance to tour their home facilities.  We got to meet their head chef and even cook along side of him.  It was pretty fun!  My friend, Elizabeth and I teamed up to cook our batch of chicken together.  Once we finished battering the chicken we were taught how important it is to lay each piece a specific way on the frying sheet.  The order matters to ensure cooking evenly between small pieces and larger ones since they all go into the frier together.

We had flour all over our arms and aprons.  I was even dusting flour off the toes of my boots when we were done.  Who said cooking isn’t fun?  It made me want to go home and play in a bucket of flour.  We sure laughed a lot which is a good sign, yes?  After all of us breaded the chicken, the KFC chefs fried it up and served us.  That’s right, we got to taste the chicken we cooked and lived to talk about it.  It was delicious!

Touring the Colonel Sanders museum was interesting.  When I came home to tell my kids about it the first thing T said was ‘Colonel Sanders is a real man?!‘ which I think a lot of people don’t realize.  Touring the museum would make the perfect history field trip for children.  We got to see the real desk that belonged to Colonel Sanders and even see the vault the secret recipe is locked in.  Several of the mom bloggers attempted to crack the lock with their own secret combinations but no one was successful.  The museum had a timeline displayed throughout the life of KFC and Colonel Sanders.  We saw the original buckets used for chicken and it was funny to see how many of us actually remember some of the older versions from when we were kids.

They created a video for me to share with a glimpse behind the scenes of my experience.  Enjoy!
