Most of us are never going to have a fabulously expensive wardrobe that would make the likes of Kim Kardashian jealous, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t make the outfits we have, look more like haute couture than throwaway items from the mall.
There are actually hundreds of things you can do to make your low-cost garments look better, that won’t set you back much money. Here are just a few ideas to help you turn your average outfits into runway showstoppers:
Visit a Tailor
Often, those superstars whose wardrobe we all envy don’t look amazing because their clothes are more expensive – they look wonderful because their clothes are perfectly tailored to fit their bodies.
When you buy clothes off the peg, they’re rarely going to fit you like a glove. Your pants might be an inch or so too long, your dress slightly baggy or your shirts a bit longer than you’d like. This can easily be fixed by having them tailored to your exact measurement. Sure, you’ll have to pay a few more dollars per item, but it’s worth it to look like your favorite A-lister, isn’t it?
Add Some Bling
If your outfit doesn’t exactly look expensive, add some Frost NYC earrings and a low-cost costume necklace, and you’ll instantly look more expensive, even if you haven’t spent much money at all.
Shine Your Shoes
Have you ever seen Emma Watson wearing scuffed shoes on the red carpet? We don’t think so! Whether you bought your shoes from ASOS or Jimmy Choo, they will not look expensive if they’re scuffed and beaten up, so take the time to shine and polish your shoes before you step out of the door and they’ll always look great.
Buy a Nice Coat
If you don’t have much money to spend on your wardrobe, at least invest in a nice coat, especially if you live in an area where a jacket is often necessary. If your coat looks expensive, you can be wearing the cheapest, nastiest outfit underneath and no one will know!
Using your home washer and dryer to take care of your clothes will make them fade, shrink and fall apart in no time at all. If you don’t have the budget for designer clothes, but you have a few extra dollars to spare, have your clothes dry cleaned and they’ll look much better for longer.
Back in Black
Black is a fashion favorite for a reason – it always looks good, and it hides all kinds of imperfections. Unless you looked really, really closely, you would be hard-pressed to see the difference between a black dress bought from the mall and one made by Chanel!
You’d be surprised just how much difference properly storing your clothes can be. Check out Threads Magazine to find out exactly how you should be storing all your best clothes. It is also a good idea to steam, rather than iron garments before putting them away as this will not damage clothes as much, and keep them, even more, wrinkle free.
