When T decided she wanted to have an Alice in Wonderland theme for her Sweet 16 she asked Andrew to dress as the Mad Hatter. This worked perfect since I had just been given the opportunity to review a costume from BirthdayinaBox.com.
T fell in love with the red dress Alice wears in the new Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland and the vibrant colors in the movie was exactly what she wanted for her party. Although costumes were optional, we wanted to have as many of the main characters present at the party that we could plan for.
Buying costumes in the middle of the year is not an easy task. Searching party stores for items that are usually only popular around Halloween left us at a dead end most of the time. When hunting for Andrew’s Mad Hatter costume we came across many options online. We wanted him to be dressed as closely to Johnny Depp as possible. The costume that we knew would be a perfect choice was the Men’s Prestige Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter from Birthday in a Box.
I was a little nervous about ordering a costume online without trying it on. Luckily the measurements on the website were pretty exact and it fit beautifully. Andrew is 6′ tall and about 180lbs. There were two size choices to chose between – Men’s Standard and Teen. Surprisingly the size I decided to order was the Teen. The measurements on the teen costume were chest: 38-40, waist: 32-34, hips: 37-39 and inseam: 29-31. The pants on Mad Hatter are made to be short to show the colorful socks therefore the inseam can be a little shorter than usual. The men’s size was quite a bit larger in the chest and waist plus the inseam would have caused the pants to be too long.
I highly suggest taking measurements and paying close attention to the sizing chart before ordering a costume online for any age.
The Mad Hatter costume came with the faux shirt front, jacket, bow, pants, and hat with hair. Andrew purchased the white gloves at a local costume shop and we found the purple and orange socks at Academy Sports in the baseball section. He had to buy a pair of purple and a pair of orange and mismatch them.
The hat that came with the costume was taller than we expected and the attached hair was longer. Although it would have worked we found a different Mad Hatter hat and a separate wig at our local costume shop that he purchased and wore to the party. The hat that came with the costume would require adding some stuffing or newspaper to the top on the inside to keep it standing straight. I do like that the hair was longer than needed since it is made to fit multiple head sizes with different lengths of necks. I know not everyone is the same so being able to trim the wig is much easier than trying to figure out how to make it longer.
Andrew’s makeup was professionally done at the MAC makeup store in our local mall. He was so embarrassed having it done and walking out to the vehicle in regular clothes. I must say I thought it was hilarious – considering I wasn’t there. I think he looked amazing and he received a lot of compliments. He saved the costume and we are already planning to dress up again this Halloween. He was pleased with the costume and said it was very comfortable.
Full Disclosure: I received the Mad Hatter costume from Birthday in a Box to review. All accessories were purchased on my own. All opinions are 100% mine.
