Gab’s ER visit

Gab’s ER visit

November 2, 2009 in Gabby Updates

I am writing this live update from Cook Children’s hospital.

I wrote yesterday about Gab’s toothache that led to swelling. Well tonight I wanted to post a quick update on how she is doing. We got in to see a dentist this afternoon with her swelling still the same. He took xrays of her tooth, which wasn’t easy with all the swelling, and found that the root was completely absorbed with infection. He knew she needed the tooth extracted as soon as possible but felt she needed full sedation which he doesn’t offer in his office for her age. After being referred to about five other dentists and calling all of them, we ended up in the ER. Each dental office I called said she was too swollen to work with and she was considered urgent care. None of them could get her in to be seen in a timely manner and felt she should be seen in the ER.

At this point they have started her IV and the first round of antibiotics. She is going to be given two different kinds and then hopefully be sent home. We have already been here six hours and counting… They spoke with her other doctor and she is going to make some calls to try and schedule the oral surgeon within the next two days. The antibiotics are supposed to last in her system for 24 hours and they hope her surgery is scheduled within that time. I hope they are right. I hate seeing her like this.

I’m glad she seems to be staying strong and although she is now running a fever of 101.5 she has not had any seizures yet. I’m just crossing my fingers it stays that way.

I’ll keep everyone updated and post again soon. I’ve been trying to update along the process via Twitter if you want to follow there. @MommaDJane

The hospitals Internet wouldn’t allow me to connect via laptop for some strange reason so this update is being created via iPhone.

We appreciate all the well wishes!
