When comparing the show, Rizzoli & Isles, to my life I was asked:
Have you had a close and compassionate yet peculiar and argumentative relationship with a friend or coworker?
This question reminds me of the saying opposites attract.
Despite their many differences, Rizzoli & Isles are best friends with a peculiar and compassionate relationship. As exec-producer Janet Tamaro explains, “There’s something rare about their relationship that I see in the world but not enough on television: two smart, strong, competent women who instinctively drop the protective shield when they’re with each other.”
It’s ironic that this question was asked right after I get home from attending a social media conference where I shared a room with my best friend from New Hampshire. Brandy and I hadn’t seen each other in two years. We can call one another at any time of any day and drop our personal protective shield. We have shared all kinds of life challenges with one another and have both shed tears to one another. That’s what best friends do. On the flip side in many ways we are opposites.
Rizzoli and Isles both are extremely smart career driven women. Rizzoli is athletic, has a straight forward attitude, slightly closed off to others and somewhat boisterous. Isles is very sweet, somewhat quiet with a shy attitude and more trusting of others. Total opposites.
One of my favorite scenes with Rizzoli and Isles is when Rizzoli is staying with Isles after her apartment was broken into, she is laying on her back on the bed and Isles comes in the room and flops down next to her to chat. At first Rizzoli gives the vibe that she feels weird laying in the same bed as her friend but quickly becomes comfortable having girl talk. It was kind of funny to see how different they both are but how much they depend on one other as best friends.
Rizzoli and Isles remind me of Brandy and myself.
